A large crowd assembled early Friday morning for advice from John Henes, a master teacher of the Alexander Technique and seasoned performer. An instructor of Alexander Technique at both Northwestern and DePaul Universities, Henes maintains a private studio and has provided workshops for over twenty years. Henes's ITG presentation provided an introduction to the Alexander Technique, discussions on breathing and performance anxiety, and short impromptu lessons given to three audience volunteers.

F. Matthias Alexander, Henes explained, was an actor who suffered frequently from hoarseness. Having found no relief from the medical field, Alexander discovered that it was the use of his body that was causing his vocal problems. From this discovery Alexander developed the technique that performers and athletes use frequently today. John Henes suffered his own physical ailment as a student. Having struggled from chronic lower back pain, Henes began to study and use the Alexander Technique.

Henes's discussion of breathing was demonstrated through three short lessons given to volunteers from the audience. The effects of Henes's teaching, done primarily with the hands and little verbal instruction, was immediately evident in each participant's playing and posture. The key to proper body use, Henes stated, "is letting go."

Henes was eager to share his own anecdotes and experiences throughout the clinic which resulted in a comfortable atmosphere for everyone present. The sixty minute presentation was concise and informative and was the perfect start to another great day at ITG.
