OK, none of you know me, and it's probably strange to have someone just bar=
ge in here, raving about their new trumpet, but...
....I just *have* to type something to a group that might be able to apprec=
iate.
(I've already chattered on & on about it to anyone unlucky enough to have a=
nswered their phone today. :)
After six months of waiting for them to get around to making it, I finally =
got the Schilke B-1 that had been ordered in February!
Still love the horn I've had for about six years now-- (a Yamaha 2320) but =
when people say Shilke's are free blowing-- I guess they weren't blowing sm=
oke!
I had no idea what a difference resistance can make!
Feels like I've been unchained or something.
("I'm *free* brothers!")
Anyway, just thought I'd post for the heck of it. Summer finals end Friday=
-- so that's two weeks to fart around & play with my new toy... :)
A few observations though...
Is it my imagination, or is the Schilke still heavier than the Yamaha? (Li=
ke anyone reading this has 2 of them laying around that they can weigh...)
I mean, I ordered the Schilke with the so called "beryllium bronze" or ligh=
t weight bell, but the horn still feels heavier? Valve casings then?
And speaking of the light weight bell, how fragile *are* they? Won't hurt =
it to put it on a trumpet stand will it? (yes I'm totally paranoid about it=
-- I guess that will wear off, but I hope not overmuch.)
Now, trying to be totally objective....
I honestly haven't noticed much difference in the tone. Then again I've al=
ways been taught that it's who's playing the instrument not the instrument =
itself that makes for tone. One horn doesn't seem any "brighter" or "warm=
er" to me at least. I haven't played with a combo or anyone yet so I don't=
know how it will sound in a rehearsal hall..
This most disturbing...
I've noticed I break some notes around E and F at the top of the clef. I m=
ight actually be trying to squeek them out higher or something. Don't know=
.... That doesn't happen when I'm playing the more familiar horn. What mi=
ght be up with that? The new horn will have a little different intonation =
to get used to I suppose?
Other than that, I love it! Looks like they still do a fine job on the cra=
ftsmanship, and I like those classic lines with no braces except where abso=
lutely necessary.
My only problem now is-- as some of you might guess-- giving myself time t=
o rest before I pick it back up again!
Anyway thanks for listening,
