Can anyone recommend a make & model for such an "effects pedal"? I've seen
older devices mentioned, but what current day models?
I've been playing in a 9-piece rock "cover" band for the past year, and it
strikes me that this would be great way to make our 2-man horn section
(trumpet and tenor) sound like 4. Also, "effects" might let me grab some
air-time from the guitar solos on pieces that normally "don't work" for
trumpet solos.

Anyone ever heard that Clark Terry record: The Varitone Sound of Clark
Terry (Impulse)? I'm not sure if it ever came out on CD. I read somewhere
that Clark was apparently a bit embarrased by the album and was pretty happy
to stop using the Varitone attachment which doubles the played pitch an
octave below. Saxophonist Eddie Harris made the Varitone famous (if only
for a little while). I have a Sonny Stitt record where he uses it too, but
Clark was the first trumpet player to make an album with the Varitone. I
personally really like that record. Clark still sounds like Clark to me -
incredible. The "Electric Mumbles' is cool too as is the Grand Canyon
Suite. You can probably find the record for $5 somewhere...
Hendrix used to have a pedal called Octavia that was specifically designed
for him. I'm not sure if that is still around, but it might sound cool
through a trumpet. I'm sure most music stores that cater to the guitarist
will have a full line up of pedals and boxes that have octave effects.
Might be worth checking out...
