Here's one approach (you'll get as many opinions as there are members on
this list):

Practice the Herbert Clarke Technical Studies, first page, very softly (as
perscribed in the text).

Take your time and build up slowly. Listen for the "sheen" on the sound
(classic, beautiful cornet sound), and get the quiet sound as focused as
possible (i.e., concentrate on the *sound*, and breath control, rather than
thinking about "chops").

Progressively build up the exercises one at a time until you can play the
first page with relative comfort and ease in single "setting" (taking
healthy relaxed breaths in between lines).

Give yourself PLENTY of time to achieve this - at least a month, two, or
more... BE PATIENT, and don't over-practice.

This should help develop a focused, centered sound, and the concept of
correct breathing. Once you've laid down this foundation, continue to
expand it outwards, and add other material to your daily routine.

In the 'modern' trumpet playing world, the Clarke Studies often run contrary
to the levels of volume, hard articulation and such that are required, but
they are an essential "basis" for young/beginning players and a real "tonic"
(and yardstick) for advance players.

Hello all,

I'm a amateur trumpet player and I've always been trying to achieve a steady
and focused stream of air from my aperture. I've been taught to achieve a
steady string of airflow rather then a scattered one. But up til now, I
haven't been able to achieve it. Thus, my tone is rather scattered and not
focused. Can anyone pls help me with this? Like with any exercises that can
help me improve my air stream.

Hope to get a reply.

Thank you.

Shawn
