William Graham, regarding your community band, I'm in one, too, led by
Bill Moffit, he of marching band and composition fame! It's been active
since 1999 and for most of it, I've played Eb trumpet. Now that I have a
true cornet, I'm going to try and activate that.
What you hit on about loving to play together is very important.
Sometimes, we can all lose sight and track of that. You go back to
1880s-1900s music and many things, later orchestrated for bands and
such, started out as parlor music! And, you think about bands such as
the Jack Daniels Silver Cornet Band, which went steady from about
1880-1920, and those people had to like each other and playing together
reasonably well or they wouldn't've lasted. (I hope I have the dates
right; I'm going on what I remember was said when their reenactment band
played at ITG.)
And, of course, in those bands, all I have to do is sit and be a section
player. I don't need to rock!! :-)
