I too lurk and occasionally post on TPIN. I saw this post and almost lost
my lunch. What great timing of you!
You know that Maynard has influenced thousands, if not Millions(!) of young
trumpeters. Sometimes I wonder how people like yourself can just openly
"bash" people... go practice and try to inspire people like Maynard has. I
wish you the best of luck in that regard.
Maynard's bravura, stage presence, control over an audience, entertainment
ability IMO equalled his trumpet artistry. So what if he played Gallactica
(I love that track actually for it's over the top "groove"! ;). He still
kicked tail on it. How about Louis' frilly records of the 60's? Do you
openly disrespect his artistry as well? Miles playing Cindy Lauper? Time
to bash him, too I'd guess. Who's next?
The first right an artist has is to make music that THEY like. If Maynard
didn't want to do it, so be it. If it wasn't for Maynard and my early
exposure to him I would have never found Miles, Freddie, Louis, Maurice,
etc. I think Bud Herseth called Maynard the greatest brass player in the
20th century. I guess that was a poor choice as well.
Sorry for my vent but your incredibly bad timing of this post really upset
me. Let's celebrate the life of a giant.

I've been a lurker on TPIN for a while and this may get me roasted but
I can't be the only one out there who feels this way.
Maynard made some incredibly poor choices going down the road to
riches over the years. To be as talented as he was and to waste it on
stuff like The Theme to Battlestar Gallactica?! Rocky Disco II (with
Sylvester Stallone???). I mean some of those albums from early 80's
barely had any real music on them! I had always hoped he would have
teamed up with a more modern day Keith Mansfield.
And one more criticism as much as I love him, on the At the Top video
filmed in the 70's what's with the squeeling double and triple high
squelch stuff anyway, I mean he sounded so much better playing in the
range from high C to double A or so because he had that HUGE CLEAN
STEELY SOUND!!!
