Hopefully this isn't too off but along the lines of reading music.

My 7yr old son recently asked me how I could read the trumpet music without the words.

I took this opening as a brief chance to talk about notes, their names, and then showed him how the notes matched up to a fingering chart.  The idea you could play more than one note per fingering nearly blew his mind!
