Oddly enough Darren, along with playing by the notes, the older I get, I'm
beginning to concentrate more on playing by the lyrics. While by no stretch
of the imagination am I a vocalist, thinking as a vocalist and trying to
learn the words of a song does help me to play the way I want to play. I'm
getting on in age, and it goes without saying that I could benefit by going
to a teacher, but for the time being I have to practice and play according
to my own terms. So far, so good with my current 'routine'. My plan to live
until 90 and beyond remains in effect. I'm sure that one of these days I'm
going to go back to a teacher even when I'm real old and crotchety. 8-)

>Hopefully this isn't too off but along the lines of reading music.
>My 7yr old son recently asked me how I could read the trumpet music without
the words.
>I took this opening as a brief chance to talk about notes, their names, and
then showed him how the notes matched up to a fingering chart. The idea you
could play more than one note per >fingering nearly blew his mind!
