Indeed, the Bruckner 7 is fantastic. I also have the
Debussy DVD Claudio Abbado recorded at Lucern. In it
a number of the orchestra's musicians are interviewed
and brief clips are shown. Friedrich makes the
point that he loves playing for Abbado, because Abbado
lets him play like he wants but convincingly sells
his interpretive vision in such a way that Friedrich
wants to follow it. So I guess this means that
Abbado hires great musicians, respects them and
their abilities, and persuades them to follow his
lead. Abbado views this orchestra like an extended
chamber ensemble and only hires people who love to
listen to each other play, as a chamber ensemble
would.
Great conducting still matters. The proof is in
the sound, and the fact that the musicians are
manifestly enjoying the experience.
Highly recommended DVDs.
