Jeff is right on the money here.
I listen to alot of music. Also, while it may be
obsessive, when I hear a jingle or radio tag theme for
a show or some such thing, I imagine myself playing
it -- fingerings and all. In fact, it bugs me
if I can't figure it out after hearing it a few
times. So, intervals and their associated
fingering patterns are "practiced" by me even when
I'm not playing the trumpet.
I also imagine and often play descant parts to
many hymns during the course of a year. This is
good ear training. It's as close as the church
trumpeter is going to get to "improvisation"
unless your in a Contemporary Christian church band.
