I hadn't heard that John passed away. Sad news indeed. I played for  
him in 1979-81. I learned more about music from him than anyone I  
have ever studied with. He was a one-of-a-kind. His son is in San  
Francisco, and I had e-mailed him just last year asking about John.   
For those that didn't know him, he was a violist who led the Jazz  
Band, the Chamber Orchestra, and the Russian Balalaika Orchestra. He  
"conducted" them all pretty much the same! Thanks for the info Jeff.
