That's the exact same time frame I played under Garvey, at a 2 week
jazz
camp at the University of Illinois. I was there the summer of 79 and the
summer of 80. (In fact, in the 80 band Jeff Helgeson was in the same
trumpet section I was).
God bless John....we all thought he was such a character. He used
these
really wild illustrations when he was getting around to telling us how to
play
the music in front of us. I can remember how he would have us set our horns
down and act like we were swimming through molasses. Apparently, that was
supposed to help us understand how he wanted a particular passage played!
He really knew his stuff, though. What an incredible musician. I
wish I would
have been older when I was in contact with him. I think I would have been
able to
appreciate him more. I sure got my money's worth working with him, that's
for sure.
Sorry to hear about him passing.
Mike

I hadn't heard that John passed away. Sad news indeed. I played for
him in 1979-81. I learned more about music from him than anyone I
have ever studied with. He was a one-of-a-kind. His son is in San
Francisco, and I had e-mailed him just last year asking about John.
For those that didn't know him, he was a violist who led the Jazz
Band, the Chamber Orchestra, and the Russian Balalaika Orchestra. He
"conducted" them all pretty much the same! Thanks for the info Jeff.
