Now I'm considering playing around with miking my trumpet and playing with
electronic effects like distortion, octave displacement etc. Are there any
devices around that I could use for this that are cheap?

Dave,
Check out a Digitech Vocalist Harmonizer. I use this device in one of my
groups, and it gives a really neat effect, especially if you're playing
background stuff over pop or light jazz. It gives you the ability to pick
the key you're in, tell it major or minor, select the type of harmonization
you want (too much detail for this reply), and you can cut it on and off
with a footswitch. It's a gimmick, but I can't tell you how many times I've
had people come up to me after a gig and say, "wow, man, the horn sounds
great! What are you doing?" If you use it sparingly, people can't figure
out what it is, but they love it! Check it out. You can get one of these
used for about $250 and can run your mic directly into it, or through a WOW
pedal, and then into it.
