Good point. It's easy to forget that great jazz players work with tunes &
changes the same way orchestral players work with exceprts and concertos.
But... It's also true that most good jazz players can usually read &
improvise over changes at the drop of a hat, also, right?
The "practice time" for the great players is about nuance, I would assume
...just like it is for good orchestral/legit players with excerpts and
concertos.

One thing to remember about players like Chet and others....
They played the same tunes over and over night after after night until each
change came automatically. Of course over their careers they used a lot of
tunes, but that was over a long time. They had "their' tunes down pat!
I saw Red Rodney perhaps 20 years apart and he still was doing "Shoes"..
