For your info Phil, I was the first white to go with black bands in the
history of jazz....
I was 15 when I hoined the great Sabby Lewis band at the Savoy in Boston
with Big Nick on tenor, later replaced by
Sonny Stits, Al Morgan on bass Joe Booker drums...and in 1942 joined
Lucky Millinder at the
Savoy and the Apollo in NY after which we went on a long national tour.
I played with his band for quite a few years ...with the few breaks we had
in between tours I played withe Snub Mosely
snd Eddie Barefield....a great septet....Its all in "The Man Behind The
Horn" my bio.
Regards, Leon Merian
