it seems that your definition of good jazz involves melody
recognition...which is certainly a portion of it, but by no means the
whole...one of the most significant aspects of jazz is the ability to
improvise, not just around the melody, but around the chords, creating
something specifically NOT identifiable as a known melody, but a spontaneous
creation that bears a little resemblance as possible to something already
known...of course, nothing is entirely original, as many of the "licks" and
"lines" played over the chords are portions of practiced scales, arpeggios,
patterns, etc., but the way they are assembled ideally is to be spontaneous,
so that each time a solo is played it is new and fresh...with that said,
there are those like chris botti (whom i happen to like a lot) that tend to
play more melody and less real improvised solos for the most part....sounds
like that's your "cup of tea"...but don't confuse that as being the
benchmark for a jazz offering of a standard....listen to miles, and you'll
see what i mean....dave lee
