It would be interesting to hear what Bach would have done with bebop! ;-)

I'm sure there are as many viewpoints on improvising - jazz, baroque,
whatever - as there are souls in the universe.  Better to look for the
validity in a viewpoint than to malign it, right? (MHO).

When I was a teenager and in my early twenties, I was ultra critical of
almost everything I heard.  The older I get, the more I *appreciate* almost
everything I hear.

Amen Stan.  Maybe we need to agree on some basic definitions of what we mean
by "Jazz."  Maybe we need to agree that it is possible to include a
beautiful rendition of the original melody before an amazing and inspiring
improvisation and both are wonderful to hear.

Bach was reportedly great at improvising.
