Same  subject, different discussion.

A few years ago, I wrote out a trumpet trio for the SSB. I took (by
memory) the "fanfare" parts for trumpet 1 from the version we played in
high school...fairly standard stuff, nothing fancy. "And the rocket's
red glare---ta-ta---" etc.

I was NOT appreciated by the crowd (a church). Anyone have any similar
experiences?

==================================

This is kind of venturing off the original subject and into style, but my
policy is to always play it 100% straight unless the conductor requests
embellishments and I always do it straight when I do it solo. In answer to your
question though, I have not had a bad experience doing the SSB.

I play in several groups. In one of them, the conductor always requests the
(usual) extra trumpeting. In all the others, it is sort of considered
showing off to add the extra trumpeting. So, in my case, it varies from group to
group.

I "play the ink" on bugle calls, national anthems (regardless of the
country), really just out of respect for the particular piece. Please don't
consider this to be a criticism of how you do it. This is just how I am used to
doing things.
