[TPIN] Great players vs. ok players

You can't fault people for complementing you, and the experience they have
is way different than the experience you have. Maybe you have a happy or a
sincere or a pensive attitude and that comes through in your playing. I
struggled with this in collage and talked to my teacher, who simply said,
when someone complements you, smile and say thank you. This has served me
well for years.

I've enjoyed this thread, and Ian, again, you cracked my up.

I agree with this statement (quoted below). The general public doesn't
have a clue, or at least, many of them don't.

I play regularly at my church and in several other groups. I have a
pretty good range (which is not indicative of playing ability in and of
itself) but I'm only a mediocre player, however, I generally don't have
any problem with any of the music we play (but we don't play anything
very difficult).

I get compliments all the time, especially at my church. It's not so
bad when people say, "It sounded good today" but for some reason, lots
of people seem to think I'm this really incredible player, and those
types of compliments bother me, since I know I'm not.

I've gotten into a couple of discussion with several people, and they
all want to "agree to disagree" even when I try to explain the
attribute of a "really good" player.

Anybody else ever notice this?
