I think it means a lot coming from someone who heard it first hand.
 
I was contemplating contributing that same quote (from  Herseth) on the 
"Buzz" thread.
 
(Herseth told Soloff the same thing according to Loius Davidson's Trumpet  
Profiles.)
 
 
The world's already got a Herseth......   :)
 
(Not that he's not my favorite among a bunch of favorites in the Orchestral  
firmament.)
 
There's definitely something in human nature that makes us tend to want  to 
strive to be uniquely excellent and in so doing kill ourselves to be  just like 
everybody else or at least one or a few somebody elses in order to  achieve 
it.
 
I have to constantly remind myself that I need to listen, listen, LISTEN,  
practice, practice, PRACTICE, and then let myself BECOME  myself through my 
playing.
 
(Clams and whatever else that might not go perfectly obviously to be  
strenously avoided as ever....)
 
Great Advice for us all, at whatever level we find ourselves.
