The statement makes no sense.
  Why would an orchestra schedule a concert knowing the musicians  
were not going to be paid?  Was the orchestra's management insane?  
Hire a world famous soloist and not pay the musicians? The American  
Federation of Musicians would have had a field day. Things don't  
happen in the USA the way you have described.
