Yea Paul, I saw you there and we were all glad you came, along with everyone else who attended. I am one of Jerry's satisfied customers, and was up front in the first row with Mac Gollehon- who I might add has been working with Jerry as a student since 1979, and Herbert Smith from the Rochester Philharmonic who is also currently working with Jerry. I hung out with Mac, Herb, Jerry, Mac's wife Carol and Jerry's wife Yamicho. My Merril wife was also there. We all met at Jerry Callet's 76th birthday celibration and have remained as friends ever since. While at the conference with Jerry and crew the upstairs I saw you come by the Callet Trumpet Studio in room 205.

On the Rochester Philharmonic website Herb Smith says:

Influential teachers: I have had many influential teachers but lately my trumpet mentor is Jerry Callet. He has changed my trumpet playing upside down and back again. I am now playing better than I have ever played in my life.

As far as myself, I have been working with Jerry for over 6+ years now. The first 6 were pure Tongue Controlled Embouchure (TCE) as described in the book "Trumpet Secrets", and at my last lesson Jerry turned me onto what he is now calling Super- SuperChops, which Mac and Herb are also doing now. This is the latest and greatest out of the Callet studio and involves a combination of TCE and SuperChops.

Like Herb I also attest that Jerry has changed my trumpet playing upside down and back again. I am also now playing better than I have ever played in my life. I keep improving and the improvements when they are at their best can be measured on a daily basis. The plateaus have been very short and the climbs steep and long.

One thing Mac said during the Callet clinic was very insightful. He said that (and you will have to look at Callet's book: Trumpet Secrets, to see what he was talking about.), is in the book there are five pages of illustration with a head/face/lips/mouth/tongue labeled Trumpet Secret 1 through Trumpet Secret 5- I believe (I can't remember if there was a #6). They show the different aspects of TCE from a physical perspective. Mac said for him each Trumpet Secret is a different embouchure variation that he uses on gigs to adjust things to get different sounds and styles. This is how high tech, versatile, and I might add easy Jerry's embouchure set-up is.

Anyway feel free to contact me if you have any questions about any of this, there is a contact page on my website.

  Thanks,
  Phillip DeFranco

Galen & all, I thought Mr. Callet's presentation was interesting and
told him afterwards that his technique sounded like I played for the
first 5 years or so when I started playing. His group seemed to agree
after hearing my old and new way of playing.
Very interesting.
