Completely agree, Bruce.  Mahler was the first classical composer I  ever 
listened to and studied in great detail.  Mahler was recommended to  me by a 
friend when I asked the same question as the original poster and was  looking for 
classical music with a lot of brass.
 
There are some great recordings by the Chicago Symphony that would have  
Adolph Herseth on principal trumpet.
