I have been reading this thread with interest, and would like to add an
observation, based on my 40 or so years experience, and a South African
perspective.
I have come to love the unique sound of British brass bands, which comes
down to the design and playing style of their cornets. US bands (at least
the recordings Ive heard) have a very different sound, which I peg to the
use of trumpets, the design of American cornets and the design of the mpc
(possibly a combination). An example would be Wyntons famous recording of
cornet solos and the wind ensemble accompanying him. Had I not seen pics of
him during the recording sessions, I would have sworn he was playing a
trumpet. I know this goes beyond his equipment, and would include his own
playing style, which is certainly trumpet oriented. Great music,
nevertheless!!
I think we just have to acknowledge two different cultures here, which makes
for a far richer heritage for all of us to belong.
Back in the mid 60s I also had a dual role: A trumpet player in a cadet
band (bugles, trumpets and drums) and a cornet player in a regimental band
(which included woodwind instruments). Since I didnt have the resources to
buy a cornet (and one wasnt available for loan by the band) I was allowed
to use a trumpet. Nowadays, these regimental bands have a hodge-podge of
personal instruments (mostly trumpets), which is far from ideal. I now own
a cornet (and use a Wick 2B mpc) and am trying to catch up on lost time to
develop that sound. I had a real thrill to play in a British band for just
one rehearsal (Long Melford Silver Band) during my UK visit last June, and
in some small way tasted the culture. One day I might get to play in a US
band. Meanwhile, my trumpet (Bach 1½C) will do for the brass quintet, and
cornet for church, the occasional piano accompanied solo, and whenever else
I get the opportunity. As for the flugel, it doesnt come out as often as
it should!
Thanks for listening, folks. Im proud to belong.
