For most of my life, musicians didn't speak about singers as
musicians....There is some justification for this. When I was in High
School, back in the 50's, I joined the choir. It was the first year that our
school had a choir, and that year, we went to the high school competition in
upstate New York, and took second place. - Most of us had no musical
training at all, and the reason we were so good was entirely because of the
choir director....She was an excellent teacher. But if we had had a school
band, and all the musicians in the band had as little knowledge of music as
the choir had, well....I think you know what the result would have
been....There just isn't nearly as much musicianship, and training, and
hours of practice required of singers as there is of instrumentalists.
