Chase Sanborn certainly knows his way around the trumpet and  
flugelhorn, and showcases those talents to great effect on his latest  
release, Perking Up. Sanborn is heard in duo and trio settings,  
featuring the superior skills of pianist Mark Eisenman, bassist Steve  
Wallace and guitarist Reg Schwager.

The 11 tracks are comprised of nine lesser-known standards, and two  
originals by Sanborn. The leader mixes up the instrumentation,  
including trios with piano or guitar, three horn/piano duets, and a  
masterly workout with bassist Steve Wallace (‘Invitation’). The disc  
is illuminated by sublime statements (‘I Wish You Love’), moments of  
aching poignancy (‘Never Let Me Go’), edgy mute work (Sanborn’s  
‘Rompin’ at The Rex) and references to Charlie Parker (Sanborn’s  
‘Consternation’). The other musicians share Sanborn’s wide-ranging  
sensibilities, responding easily to potent, rapid switches of  
emphasis. Creativity is front and center here. Chase Sanborn is  
exactly the right artist for this venture.
