A good question indeed, but one without a simple answer.
The short answer I would give is to look for a used large bore Bach C.
Generally, look for a 229 or 239 bell (229 seems more popular for
orchestral players). Leadpipe choice makes a big difference in the
playing characteristics. The 25A is probably a good compromise between
good sound, OK intonation, and OK slotting. A 25R (i.e. reversed) pipe
will play a bit more open than a 25A. The 25S is the longest of the
non-reversed pipes, with better intonation, but the sound is evidently
not as desireable, because I don't see many of these around.
The 25H pipe is short and fairly open. Many people use it.
There are other good brands. The B&S Challenger II models designed
for Jouko Harjanne are good. (Look for the JH moniker in the model name.)
Yahama makes a number of well-respected models.
I really like the Edwards Generation II C trumpet line, but I'm sticking to my
used Bach for the time being.
While Bach B-flats seem to be the canonical sound most people go for,
in the C trumpet world you usually give up some playability to get the
desired sound.

for everything else and love the sound i get from it....with that in mind,
what is the usual C trumpet that would favorably compare to that
horn....thanks, dave
