  It would be an interesting exercise to measure one's tolerance for various levels of reharmonization of a familiar tune.  I'm sure it's different for different people.

   
    In my own case, my ear becomes, "tired" (if you will) when I go over a melody many times in an attempt to harmonize it. After a while, I find myself using ridiculously complicated chords in an unconscious attempt (apparently) to escape boredom. So, I usually hang it up for a couple of days, and then pick the job up at some later time.
