The good ones can control just how far "in" or "out" they play. Once you can
do that you have another technique for developing a solo. Start out way
inside and then get more and more adventuresome until it sounds like you're
completely lost and then WHAM! You drop right back inside.

And you can go out rhythmically, while staying within the harmonic
framework, or go out harmonically while keeping the rhythm going.

Playing outside really well is not easy to do. You don't do it my simply
"letting it all hang out," as though you just "turn off all the rules" and
letting chips fall where they may. You can do that, but the result is just
noodling and nonsense. Playing outside doesn't mean "no rules" it means
playing with different kinds of rules. But rules they are and rule they do.
