Hey Jon and crew,
Check out a later Mingus album - Live at Carnegie Hall. There's only one tune on each of the sides - C Jam Blues and then Perdido. It's a live jam session more or less. The whole record is a gas and Rahsaan Roland Kirk steals the show on both sides. Check out Perdido. The best part of this record is the total mix of styles of the soloists. A young Jon Faddis plays (very, very much in a Dizzy mold - complete licks and choruses intact), Charles McPherson's alto is beautiful and very Bird oriented. Tenor man George Adams plays R&B meets avant-garde - beautiful. Don Pullen plays some classic Don Pullen piano solos. The foot-stomper is Kirk who plays the whole history of the saxophone - Hawkins through Coltrane and beyond. These guys all turn Perdido inside out. They own it and play themselves. I guess that's the goal. This one track is a real lesson on what can be done with changes. It makes me smile and laugh out loud whenever I listen to this record. What a joy.
Peace,
