Can anyone enlighten me as to whether or not Leblanc has successfully
recreated the Martin Committee trumpets and how they may be regarded
by the pros on this list? I would like to purchase a new horn with a
darker jazz sound and was reading about the Martin Committee. Also,
does anyone have experience with the Martin Magna horn?
Thanks,
Lee Griffith
When I hit the comeback trail, the first new horn I bought was the new
version of the M.C. I wasn't really happy with it because it didn't at all
feel and play like the vintage M.C. I later learned that Osmun's could
remove it's standard equipment bell which was supposedly more like what was
mounted on a new Holton trumpet and install an original M.C. bell in it's
place. While I set out to have it converted, Jim Becker showed me another
bell from a different model vintage Martin that had a gold brass bell. I
opted for that and it did make a difference. But IMHO, I'd stay away from
the new ones. Maybe it's based on my personal feeling alone, but it seems to
me the closest horn manufactured today that comes close to the way the M.C.
plays is the Yamaha Bobby Shew Z. While it slots nicely in a regular manner,
you can also play it with that old M.C. fluid feeling. But in all, the horn
of horns is the WT. It delivers whatever sound and feeling you might want to
do. The Committee isn't really a good horn if you plan to play it in a
section. Just my two cents plain.
