Good point! It's the difference between fame and notoriety / life and death.
Moving on though... Like many players of any instrument, my dream was to be
a great jazz player. Had I put my mind, heart, and soul into it, maybe it
could have been a reality. Meanwhile, because of the old 'Cash Register
Blues' where jazz clubs cash registers don't always go
ching-a-ching-a-ching, it's not a thing to be ashamed of by playing gigs in
other settings. Playing in local VFW's, polka bands, yada, put lots of money
in my pocket that I otherwise wouldn't be able to do had I limited my wants
to playing jazz. Call it 'prostitution' or whatever, but when it comes time
to put food on the table, playing all the 'schmaltz' put prime rib on mine.
Otherwise, I'd be like a Billy goat and eat tin cans for dinner. 8-)
