Seriously, IMHO, the single most important factor if you plan to gig is networking. Unless you're a monster player, then you're just another one of the many. So the only way you'll get called for gigs is by knowing the folks who make the calls or at least who make recommendations to those who make the calls. You can work your way into that network but it takes time.
Same goes for teaching, at least private teaching. The only private teachers who immediately attract students are those with a "Name" behind them - I played with so-and-so. Look for a small private college with a music program close to one of those big cities. They hire teachers without the DMA and they usually have a big turnover. It's great experience and you're more likely to get cold calls for gigs because it give you some credibility.
