Hi, Mike;
As I write, I'm listening to one of my favorite recordings, "The Ballad
Style of Stan Kenton" You can't get much better than that big, lush,
powerful sound.
I, too, prefer to close my eyes when improvising. I can actually
visualize the notes I want to play, as opposed to staring at the
audience.
Over the years, I've found that one of the best ways to really get
aquainted with your horn, style, sound and expression is to practice in
a completely pitch dark and silent room without any interference.
BTW, I get to play trombone in front of Dennis Noday every week at the
Sid Parker big band rehearsal here in Boynton Beach, FL. Dennis usually
does some Ferguson solos, just about as good as Maynard himself. What a
great player !!
