FWIW, I admire your position here, and hope that not only Leon, but perhaps
a few other players and teachers on this list that I respect chime in as
well.
Many of them, do offer, BTW, phone lessons and many will listen to you over
the phone and give you at least a brief critique without you needing to go
through the hassle of recording.
But to be able to listen to someone at a reasonable skill and experience
level and read the open constructive critiques would be enormously
beneficial to many of us. Well, OK, for me. I assume (you know what
happens when you ASSUME?) others would as well.
Personally, I'd love to do this myself (being the critiquee, not the
critiquer). Sure, I know there'll be some flames along the way despite the
fact that this forum is really about peers - if not at experience and talent
level - in sharing a common bond through music and the trumpet, and I know
that I can put aside the objective opinions from the scant few on this list
who seem to get great pleasure from flaming others.
Sadly, I have other (physical) challenges at the moment which don't even
have me playing at a level I was a couple of years ago. But I'm working on
it!

OK, I KNOW I'm steppin in it but here's my idea. I'm definately not the
best jazz player by any means but am happy to say I can hold my own. With
that said, I just finished my first sub for Don Smith and sat right next to
Jay Diversa (never really was sure how to spell his name and am not about to
ask him) Anyway, there where a couple of solos in my book when I got there.
Not sweatin the lead but who the hell amI to think I'm going to play ANY
jazz when Jay is there. That being stated, here's my idea.
Leon made mention of something awhile back that spoke to my inner
learning. (something to the effect of space between the notes was basically
it).
I would like to record 2 solos this next week from my gig. I will choose
what I think is the best, and what I think is the worst. I would then like
to have Mr. Merian discuss what I did right or wrong. Anyone should have
access to the clips I'll set up. I am not looking for a political niceness.
I know what I can and can not do. I'm looking for an HONEST evaluation of
what I did without ego.
What do you all think? Good idea? Sorry Leon for not asking you first for
your agreement but I want this to be honest and open.
Excuse time....LOL I've had about 8 days off broken up since Feb. My chops
feel great and my next day off is in Decemeber.
What does everyone think? Is it worth seeing Leon critique me here? Can
anything be learned from it? I know no matter what happens I will learn
from it. Please remember, I have ZERO ego. I appreciate the compliments
but learn better from the RAW truth of what is not good.
Waiting for response before I start the "clock".
Jon Trimble
