Did you make sure to REALLY clean the mute & get all traces of the old glue
and whatnot?
Also, with the rubber glue & contact cement, you have to coat each surface
and allow the glue to dry somewhat before you stick the pieces together.
Use something with Toluene or Isopropyl alcohol as a cleaner.
The surfaces must be clean & grease free.

I have some Gorilla glue but have not had occasion to use it yet. With
rubber cement, I have had good luck just letting the glue dry with the corks held
in place with a big rubber band. Typically, I will do it before I go to bed
at night and let the mute dry all night with the cork in place. So far,
that has worked okay. I am pretty generous with the amount of glue I use, so
the corks are pretty slippery.
I would not know how long to let it dry before trying to fix the cork to the
mute. How long do you let it dry, Eric?
