[TPIN] A new Destruction, it's our own fault

Wow, some interesting stuff I've been reading here about how
trumpets...etc...music are being destroyed. Some interesting views I've
seen also. (Sorry for the Yoda speak). Anyway, as a young cat (37) I
wanted to offer what I've found in the growing world of trumpet.
First off, there's all the "new" music. I like it..:) No I don't like to
listen to it but I like it anyway and here's why. It's simple and degrading
to common knowledge. This makes it pretty easy. Anyone who goes thru the
music of today and wants to be a serious musician will starve for more.
There's a natural "hole" that needs to be filled and hopefully it will make
us strive for more. Here's an example of a hole I found....
A few years ago I was sitting in the Les Jr band and a great lead player,
Don Smith, was playing the solo part for In The Mood. Now we all grumble
about that tune and make plenty of jokes but get this....I REALLY enjoyed
hearing that solo. I looked to Don and said, wow, that's what it's suppose
to sound like. I said, I guess it was a pretty neat tune until us kids
screwed it up. I asked him if he was sick of playing it yet (in a joking
manner) He looked at me and said, "Thank God anyone remembers ANYTHING from
that era." It was his sound and approach. Years of experience and heart
that can not be learned as much as experience and wisdom of the years
bringing it to be. I pray some day I'll have learned that approach to
trumpet.
Back then (yeah like I was there or something) wasn't the common struggle
for music? For expression of feeling? For relating to the listeners? I
don't remember any stories about "for the money".
There are many great players out there in many facets of music. Regardless
of our current society, I still feel hope there is real music alive. It's
in each of us isn't it? My point is simple....Rather then throw darts at
what is wrong, wouldn't our energies be better spent learning from the old
guys and bringing the best music forward we can? If the old ways of playing
are lost and never remembered, it's OUR fault. So what does everyone think?
Wanna play some trumpet?....:)
Thanks for listening, bring on the flame cannon...:)
