You are right on the money Derek. I do this with my students all the time.
It wakes them up to natural tuning and transfers to the horn quite easily.

One thing you might try... Get a Dr. Beat DB-90 or DB-88 and plug it into a
good sound source. It has a pitch feature that works great to play and sing
against. The drone will sound as long as you want it to and you can easily
change pitch with the big wheel on the metronome. I use this to do as much
of my warm up as I can - flow studies, lip slurs.. Arbans.. I just got the
DB-90 and it is a great piece of equipment... It says you can buy a foot
pedal to control some things. If the pedal will change the pitch on the
drone I will get one of those and make this hands free.

Playing and singing against a drone is a great way to learn natural tuning
and to find the resonant center of every note.
