You know, the greatest pleasure I have is playing young trumpet players
who only know the stuff MF did after 1980, the stuff he did in the 50s.
One, who aspires to be a jazz player, had to pick up his jaw after I
played him the Jam Session with Clarke, Clifford and MF. He had no idea
MF could play jazz (and had never heard of Clarke or Clifford).

And isn't this a sad comentary about today's jazz education in many schools,
where the band directors do not encourage their students to listen to the
great jazz players, or even play jazz CD's for them in class once in a while,
to try to get them turned on to this music.
It is sad for a few reasons:
1. The student didn't even know about Maynard's playing - pre "rock" days.
2. He had never even heard of Clifford and Clark.
3. That he is so uninformed and still "aspires to be a jazz player."
I guess that is why it is so important that we, as jazz trumpet players
(those of us who are.....), need to be "out there" in schools, or teaching
private lessons, or giving of our time, to help educate these young players about
the history of OUR music and about the aspects of listening to learn about how
to play it.
