<<Not everyone will prefer the Chicago or NY to the less-expensive
models. Some will feel that the price difference is not warranted. I
considered that carefully. A colleague in Toronto, Steve McDade, was
also testing the Chicago at the same time. When I brought up the
price, he replied: "The problem is, it's worth every penny." Since
posting the article, I have heard from a LOT of people who singled
out the Chicago as being something truly special.
Whether a horn is worth every penny, or whether it makes your life
easier, is purely personal. >>
Big "sigh" here... Maybe after I sell my house (that I moved out of after
inheriting the family digs) I'll see if Dillon has gotten in any of the new
'Chicagos' yet and give it a more extensive re-visit.... Even after having
just bought a new Bach (last thing I intended to do- but that particular horn
was just too good to let slip by)...
Final comment: Since trying it last August I couldn't help but wonder
about "unintended results." Here Yamaha/Hagstrom/Malone designed a horn with a
view towards its being an easily switchable "companion" to their 'Chicago-C'
model. And may find that the players it really catches on with are
full-time-pro/non-orchestral players...
