I strip all my trumpets by putting my trumpet in a white plastic garbage bag and a cup of household ammonia in a cup then tying a knot in the neck of the bag and let it sit in the sun for an hour or so. The vapors break down the varnish and then I just put it in warm water for a half hour or so then rinse off and all the varnish comes off in the rinse. Just be careful when you open the bag, make sure it is out of doors and you don't inhale or it will knock you on your rear.

SNIP Thinking about taking a '50's era Olds Super down to raw brass.> It's has varying degrees of finish - mostly deteriorating.> Do I risk any potential damage to the playability at all?> Best method: Wet sand the lacquer spots that are left SNIP
