>>>Last time Dave Arndt asked who played something for a movie, Jon
>>>Lewis posted in that he had played the part

Glenn - I found that to be interesting to, and a real testimony to TPIN.

I've always been very impressed with the trumpet playing (and
composition/scoring) on the original motion picture soundtrack "Lonesome
Dove". While watching it, I said to my wife: "Watch this - it's 10:45pm...
I'm going to post a question on TPIN asking who the 1st trumpet is. I'll
lay odds that I get back an answer before midnight".

Sure enough - not only did I get an answer, but I got it from Jon Lewis, who
did the work.

Of the one's that listed their equipment, there were 14 non Bach trumpets,
and 13 Bach trumpets. There were several who had no equipment listed, Very
unofficial poll but evidence that they are chosen often and not because of
any kind of studio norm or pressure. Some of the high note lead guys play
Bach horns, not just the more symphonic kind of players. It just doesn't
list whether they are standard weight or lightweight (very big difference)
or which bell model 37,43,72,25 I found that pretty interesting

As per the Bach vs. Non-Bach question: So many great lead/commercial type
players play Bachs, that you just can't generalized an answer. Lew Soloff
comes to mind, for example. Here's a world class lead-player who plays a
fairly large mouthpiece setup (old Bach 3E), and Bach horns - yet the
'sizzle' in his playing rivals anything you might get from a lighter horn.

For myself, I've been thinking seriously about either the Yamaha Bergeron
model (based on Chase's reviews) OR the Getzen Vax model, which seems to get
a lot of praise. I'm interested in a slightly more open "blow" as well as a
horn that just feels ligther in my hands. Plus the valves on my Bach Strad
ML 37 are like driving nails. Very stiff, always have been... Really want
something more nimble. The days have long since passed when I judged myself
based on how well I could play the opening to Mahler 5. Much more
interested in what I need to do with the rock band and my small jazz group.
Using the Bach for this work feels like using a tank for duck hunting. By
the time you get the barrel trained on the target, the birds are long gone
<ggg> ;-)

Anyone have any comparisons/recommendatins between the Getzen Vax model and
the Yamaha Bergeron model? In particular, as it might compare coming from
the Bach Strad ML 37?

Cheers,

- da
