I haven't tried the Getzen, but I did spend about an hour with the
Yamaha Bergeron. It is a really fine horn. Great response, terrific
intonation, consistent tone throughout the entire range, and it
doesn't break up when played loudly. I thought it might be more of a
"lead" horn, but I was pleasantly surprised at what I found to be a
great versatility. A great all-purpose horn, in other words. I
liked the tone I could get on it, but I didn't fall in love with it
like I have with the Yamaha Chicago C I bought last year. The
Yamaha C has a distinct resonance (in addition to all the other
great characteristics I cited in an earlier post) that really excites
me, and I am anxious to try the other Artist Bb horns (Chicago and
NY) to see if they excite me in the same way. Chase's comments on
the Bergeron were pretty much in line with my own observations, and
made me even more anxious to try a NY or Chicago model Yamaha. I
think going from a Bach 37 to the Bergeron would be a really easy and
comfortable switch. Better intonation, better valves, and perhaps a
bit lighter in weight, but not much. Dave Adams
