[TPIN] To clean or not to clean

Amen to that Bob. A little bit of Binak goes a long way. Oddly enough, the
Pro works fine on all my horns with the exception of the Yamaha Z. As new
and tight as the valves are on the Z, I have fewer 2nd valve hang-ups (a
common malady on Yamahas I hear) by using the Binak 495. Jeff - rather than
using dish soap to clean the valves, Lady Nanette advises using a 50 /50
solution of Simple Green and rinse and dry thoroughly. According to Nanette,
dish soap contain silicones and lanolins that are very difficult to rinse
off. Especially troublesome with the horns manufactured today is that
computer operated machines turn out valve systems with very little margin
for the 'MUNG factor' that will soon cause valves to hang up. It's good to
have our horns chem cleaned, but what about in between chem cleans when
you're on a gig and the valves hang because of a speck of dust or grime?
Don't do what I did with a brand new Olds Recording trumpet when one of the
valves hung. I tossed it clear across the bandstand. AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!

Hi Jeff - You may have left a small bit of soap residue on the valve... the
Binak will have found that in the 15 min. you played. Wipe the valve and
the casing clean and dry, and then reapply the Binak. Also, make sure not
to over do it with the Binak. It's surprising how little you need to use.
I find my results are always better when I use less than I'm inclined to
think I need.
