I was in the process of constructing a suitably frivolous reply to a previous message when this one came in.

In my view, from a mere lack of reply that is a vast leap of judgement. Certainly, to suggest that it might be the opinion of Ms Balsom herself is hypothetical. 

It may be, as a suggestion, that in the years of hard work it has taken for her to become an international classical soloist, she has not taken the time to listen to the plethora of big band/jazz/dixie trumpeters that we know are out there. It may be that she isn't aware of British players in the same style. It may even be possible that she isn't aware of Mike Vax! I think that to infer that this situation encapsulates her opinion of American trumpeters is extreme!

If Alison e-mailed Wynton - could you guarantee a reply?

Yea it is! But that sounds bitter!
