I don't know if the LSO is the favorite of Williams esp once he became music director of the Boston Pops. They cranked out a lot of recordings with Williams
They've done much of his movie stuff. I think all of the stuff he does for the movies now is LA session players. Does anyone know the story of how the LSO came to be the orchestra for the Star Wars movie?

The best Boston Pops is Summon the Heroes with Williams conducting. If you haven't heard it, go buy it right now before the store closes or do it online. All the Olympic music is on there. Festive Overture Shoshtakovich. A Bernstein gem with choir that, I believe, was the first time recorded or performed even. Some very fine brass section playing. Morrison plays some gorgeous solo parts and even better playing leading the brass section.

Since he left the Pops, has he done a lot of guest conducting? Especially recently?

Hi Guys

>Perhaps the most listened to piece of orchestral playing and magnificent trumpet playing was from the original >Star Wars soundtrack with the London Symphony Orchestra when Howard Snell was playing principal >trumpet. Who were the other guys in the section?

I'm not positive, but I think you'll find that it was Maurice Murphy, Derek Wartkins and possibly Rod Franks. I also heard that the first Star Wars session was Maurice Murphys' trial woth the orchestra!

Intersting apocyphal quote. Howard Snell on Muarice Murphy " If he'd have practiced he could have been really good!"

Intersting aside. Why is the LSO apparently the favourite recording orchestra for John Williams?

Cheers

Geoff
