The whole time I played with Maynard, I never asked him how he did it.
What I did find out from paying attention, though, was that Maynard was
designed by God to have ridiculous high chops. Maynard had no idea how he did
it, couldn't explain it if he had to, and he couldn't understand why everybody
couldn't play high like him.
I don't think he ever felt guilty about raising the bar so high for the rest of
us, and why should he? He was just doing that which came "naturally" for him.
If he had written a book or a text trying to explain what he didn't really
know, think of the damage that might've taken place. He probably did us a huge
favor by not trying to write "the Maynard Method."
