Thanks for the feedback!
I have ordered a couple of the recommended books.
Ordinarily, I try to stick to jazz trumpeters, but I did stray a couple
times - with mixed results. "Lester Leaps In" The Life and Times of
Lester "Pres" Young was only mildly interesting, mostly because of the
writing style - basically it was a list of dates, places and
accompanying musicians for his career gigs. And "I'll Sleep When I'm
Dead" The Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon. This one was a hoot.
Sex, drugs and rock & roll!
In addition to the list I posted earlier today...
I've read a couple of books on Satchmo, and while interesting, they are
basically all the same. Couple that with the Ken Burns' "History of
Jazz" and you pretty much have the complete story.
I read a story and viewed a video on the life of Louis Prima - I don't
recall the name of it, but that cat led a colorful life!
And finally, I have the book "Trumpet Kings" which has small bio
snapshots (one or two paragraphs) on most trumpeters of the jazz age.
The books that hold my interest are the ones about jazz trumpeters
written in a style that is more than just a list of play dates and
recording sessions. The ones that tell a story and describe the life -
of course, the 'road' versions are the most fun to read.
Thanks all!
James
