John, I think the band "mission statement" is a great idea. That way you
have your tail covered if you have to part ways with a particular band
member. I play trumpet in a couple of local bands including my own 16 piece
Big Band. ......................................................

I have the greatest bone section in the
world as far as I am concerned and they come every Monday night and play
their butts off, never making a comment about us.

Guess we all have our issues.

Best to all.

1. Actually I have played in quite a few bands with "mission statements."
Actually there is only one mission statement. It comes from the bandleader.
"Play the music the right way, swing your ass off and play it MY way, or get
lost..........................." Works for me.
Pretty good idea to me.
2. Dick Shearer was not only a great trombone player (Kenton band for over
12 years), but a great humorist.
At one point on the Kenton Band, the trumpet section was Myself, Jay
Saunders, Dennis Noday, Ray Brown, and Joe Marcinkiewicz. One of the loudest
sections I ever played in. (Also one of the best for playing together, listening
and having a wonderful time together.) One night after Malaguena or Malaga or
one of those Bill Holman killer pieces, he looked up at the trumpet section
and said "Is that all you guys have????"
It was hard for us to start the next piece, we were all laughing so hard.
(Which as many of you know, hurts after that many high notes in a
row.............)
