Don't even offer to check it!
If there is a problem as you board, they can take it then
and put it down below, but if at all possible, keep it with you!

At any rate, you should be able to take that on board at 25 inches,
unless the flight attendant is a male.  Men have a hard time
understanding true measurement.   :>)
